Both junior and senior academics made reference to ‘experiencing failure’, for example with research grants or teaching, and ‘feelings of vulnerability’. Some colleagues commented that it was distressing to find that initial ‘agreements were not honoured’. There was also a sense of frustration among some international colleagues in conjunction with their ‘previous achievements not being recognised’ and feeling treated like beginners. As well, adjustment to the United Kingdom seemed easier when both partners found employment they enjoyed, while one partner not finding employment, or having had to sacrifice his or her career, caused a lot of personal stress and in some instances was a consideration for leaving.
